For audio recording/MIDI sequencing, I'd recommend Cockos Reaper. http://www.cockos.com/reaper It ain't open source, but there's a 30-day trial, and a non-commercial licence costs $60. It's obviously not as versatile as stuff like ProTools, but it is pretty damn cheap. It has support for most plugin...
