~5+ hours of Twilight Princess--Tyler got a Wii last night.

Post by Falco Girgis »

I spent the weekend at Tyler's house. We went to go pick up Tyler's Wii at Gamestop. It was cool, they had cookies, and hot chocolate and all that out. I played around at the Wiiosk for awhile.

So anyway, we get it, then go terrorize the campers in the Target parking lot for awhile over the fact that we have a Wii and they don't.

So we get home and play it...

I'm certainly getting a Wii before PS3 (well... technically PS3 first, but I'm selling it). We played Wii basically all night. There were a few disappointments, but mostly a shitload of surprises and happiness.

I'll get the one and only disappointment out of the way first--graphics. Do not effing buy this console for graphics. The best looking game by far is Twilight Princess--which is a Gamecube game. Twilight Princess looks one step below RE4 (PS2 and GC) graphically. We had two Wii's at the lan party last night. Everybody was freaking out over Twilight Princess looking decent. . . but then somebody popped Shadow of the Collosus in for PS2, and the whole room came to an immediate agreement that SoTC looks better than Twilight Princess. Most of what I saw for Wii looked like decent Xbox games. Twilight Princess looks like a great Xbox game, but in no way next gen.

Now for awesomeness. The Wiimote is a freaking awesome controller. It's much smaller and more compact than I imagined, and the whole rig is completely comfortable. If you thought you'd be standing up and waving your hands like a moron at the TV the whole time, you are completely wrong. I played with one arm in my lap and the other sprawled out over the back of the chair, occassionally lifting the Wiimote to shoot something on TP. The sensitivity and all that is great. Don't even worry about that, this is a Wii, not an eyetoy...

The Wii itself is every bit as sleek and sexy as we thought. It's an extremely quiet and portable machine. Despite its size, the damn thing is packing. I think it weighs as much as my fat ass PS2.

It has 2 USB ports, 4 Lamecube ports, 2 Lamecube memory card ports, an SD card slot, and a few other random things that I forgot. (unfortunately you have to buy a seperate USB to ethernet adapter to get online without Wifi, but that's cool). Getting online is the exact same thing as the DS with the Wii. It's nice.

So we screwed around and made some Miis (customizable avatar thingers or something, I still don't know what they are, but they're fun as hell). We made a David Bowie, Oprah Winfrey, etc.

Wiisports turned out to be rather fun. 3+ hours of 20 people swinging a remote around like a moron proves its worth. It's definitely not worth buying seperately, as it reminds me of a MUCH better eyetoy game, but it is a damn good game to be bundled with the Wii.

The Wii's MP3 playing, picture browsing, and other multimedia capabilities are well done. I approve. It finds all the crap on your SD card, and you can watch slide shows and do stuff (even pull a Mario Paint on your pictures) with the wiimote.

Other than that, there's the Wii Weather or whatever that shows your local weather. It's nice. We logged onto the virtual console, but we didn't have any money. NES games - $5, SNES/Genesis games - $8, N64 games - $10. $5 for NES is shit, and $8 is too pricey for half the Genesis/SNES games, but the N64 games are like a steal.

The Wii browser or whatever isn't available yet, but every time you log online, it checks for updates (Nintendo has the ability to add more Wii "channels" which lets your Wii do other cool stuff).

Oh, and Twilight fucking owns. I'm not far enough to judge it against Okami and Ocarina of Time yet, but it's definitely up there somewhere.

So yeah, I'm going to wind up getting a Wii now. I just hope that it won't turn up to be a Gamecube 2. I'm really hoping that Nintendo has turned over a new leaf. I'm still finding it hard to trust Nintendo enough to follow them this next generation after what they did with the Lamecube.

I really doubt I'll have just a Wii, as I do plan to get a PS3, but a Wii is definitely worth owning as long as it doesn't take the same path down sub-par childishness and shit games that was the Gamecube.

So yeah, peace out.

I tried to get a Wii... but no one has anymore or even knows when anymore are coming in. Sigh.
