Environment Maker

Post by aamesxdavid »

So I suck at names, but I thought I'd share. Threw this together in Blitz3D to test out an idea I had with 3D audio. And this is my attempt to explain it.

I took stereo recordings, and split them into the left and right channel, then had them playing at different places around the listener (camera). For this little tech demo, there are 3 sets of spheres you can select to play environment sounds. There's an outer sphere you can select to play a different set of sounds that can rotate around the listener.

Here's the overhead view, to give you an idea.

Here's the link, I'd love to hear any thoughts. It's also worth noting you can replace the audio files in the "media" folder to test your own sounds.

Oh, damn. I missed this. I'm going to give it a try right after I finish my QT assignment. I'll let you know what I thought. (I'm on Ubuntu right now).

Very nice! I am severely lacking in the sound engineering department, so it's really cool to see the amount of layering and complexity that goes into ambient / environmental sound. Integrating this type of utility into a 3D map editor could produce some amazing results.

It's interesting, a lush, 3D world can look so realistic using today's high-end graphics, but it just doesn't feel realistic without proper sound.
