In my opinion, it's like the ugly duckling child of an iPhone and a Kindle. If you wanted an e-book reader, the e-ink that the Kindle has is better for your eyes, doesn't have a glare, etc. The iPad is in color, but no one will use it to read Dr. Seuss anyway! Everything else the iPad can do the iPhone can do, except the iPhone is also a phone, has a camera, etc. Besides, the Kindle AND the e-books for the Kindle are cheaper than the iPad.... Why, Apple?!

yea you might not wanna drop that kinda cash on that device. and yeah, you might have wanted to see a different device... but fuck, would i use that thing to shreds. id totally use the ebook thing. (im assuming it will let me view pdfs i own/have already) i would love to use it as a daily planner. point is people are being to harsh.

the disappointment i had when it came out was about the the same as when borat found out "pamala" was a whore. i would have loaned money to buy a macbook pro that has a swivel screen and, and a spiffy pen thingy that fit someone with magnets and all that. but we didnt get that. and its not to say apple wont bring that out, they probably will.

this is not really a computing device, which we all wanted and perhaps more importantly, expected it to be. im viewing it as a test platform for things to come. this is something to compete with the kindle, and if you look at the prices of the kindle...

While I do think its one of the worst products Apple has released, I might be inclined to get one if they add in more features in future versions (which there will inevitably be). At a minimum it would need a camera, multitasking, and flash support.

Separately, Nintendo - with which Apple increasingly competes due to the use of the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad as gaming devices - shrugged off the iPad on the weekend as delivering "no surprises".

"It was a bigger iPod Touch," Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata said.

My big question is what is going to happen to Flash.

I mean, goooodddamn. Apple just bitched slapped them across the face.

Did you see the blogs Adobe posted? A disgruntled employee posted one out of spite and almost got fired because he was showing how the "porn browsing" experience on the Ipad won't exist. Check this out:

http://theflashblog.com/?p=1703

So Apple is saying that Adobe is "lazy" with their products and is the number one leading cause to Mac System failures. And, to be honest, I can't refute that claim. Hell, just yesterday I was taking a look through some of the AS3 framework and literally found a spot where an (adobe) coder commented the code and said "A linear search. This can be made more efficient later."

. . .

Anyway, Apple is claiming that "HTML5" will become the new rich web standard, and that flash will fix or die. Interesting. I mean, fuck.

I'm mixed on the iPad. On one hand, Apple apologists regularly offer the counter-argument to critics that "It's not designed for you!" Really? Then who is it designed for? Apple didn't seem to nail down a target user at all, and every time we thought they had, they'd throw a curve ball (e.g. the lengthy iWork demo, and external keyboard).

On the other side, we have people so short-sighted that they can't even fathom the possibility that this device could have many creative applications that we haven't even imagined yet. When the iPhone was announced, did we have any idea that it would become a platform for such a variety of apps, not to mention being a respectable gaming platform? ..Or that people would use it to control their home entertainment centers, or stream music from their home computers, or use it to read e-Books?

The way I see it, the iPad is a canvas, and its usefulness will be revealed in the applications that users create for it, not to mention peripherals that may arise (e.g. cameras, etc.) and OS updates (perhaps adding some sort of multi-tasking, which is rumored). When most people give their reasons for desiring multitasking, their desired scenarios usually don't involve running more than 2-3 apps simultaneously. I don't see it beyond possibility that the iPad could support this in a future update -- though I wouldn't be surprised at all if it never showed up, sadly.

Regarding Flash, the general consensus that I tend to agree with is "good riddance". Flash is such a nuisance. It's without any doubt the number one cause of what is frequent browser instability. It makes web pages less accessible, less searchable, etc. I hope HTML5 replaces any dependency we had on Flash for video. The one casualty I'll shed a tear for, though, is the set of cool Flash games out there that I won't be able to enjoy on the iPad. Now, I don't know if this was actually Steve Jobs' motivation for not supporting it, but regardless, I agree with the argument.

Oh, also, regardless of what you say about the iPad, you would be foolish to choose a Kindle DX over an iPad, unless you *reaaaaally* loved e-Ink.

Very, very, VERY good point. Marcel and I were actually having a heated argument (read: bitchfest) yesterday about the iPad. He thinks that it's amazing.

I bitched that the lack of multitasking was absolutely ridiculous and unforgivable. His retort? "Most people don't care about that. You aren't the targeted audience."

What a load of bullshit.

Well guess what. When Google and Microsoft jump onboard and give me something WITH multitasking, guess where the nontarget audience people (like me) are going to be? Not supporting Apple.

Well guess what? When Google and Microsoft jump onboard and give you something with Multitasking, Apple will do the same, and probably even better. This is another typical Apple move--They got there first, so they're entitled to milk cash out of you by witholding amazing features until "gen 2." Get used to it. People bitched just the same about the "Iphone" and it's shitty "buttonless interface."

What you should be bitching about is why the underdog is the one expected to "revolutionize" the market and compete with giants like Microsoft and Google. If they don't play dirty (like this), they lose. Sucks for the consumer? Maybe. But does it suck as much as NOT having an underdog to bring us weird, revolutionary ideas (multitouch, i-series?)

Exactly. What is their targeted audience? Whoever makes them the most money. If they start losing money due to no multitasking, no doubt they'll add it. But they may not, because the "targeted audience," (whoever gets them the most $$) may not demand it. The "audience" of gen one will determine how gen two appears.

Is it just a "bigger Iphone"? Absolutely. Did the Iphone make them a fuckload of money? Yes. Will this make them a fuckload of money? Yes.

So why support a product or company that you just admitted will intentionally give features that people want or may be waiting for AFTER they sell a fuck ton? You willing buy 2 of every Apple product? It seems more consumer savvy to hold out and wait either for Apple to do what they could of/should of done first or until the competition gives it to us first.

Marcel doesn't give a fuck about the consumer. He's set on siding with shitty marketing schemes.

You're asking me to "get used" to substandard products being released lacking useful features just so the company can make money off of my stupidity? Mmkay.
Arce wrote:If they don't play dirty (like this), they lose.
They lose? Yes, you're right. If Apple had included multitasking, the iPad would surely be doomed.

Wrong, cockphlegm. If they had included features such as this, they would have the support of people like me (and everybody else bitching in this topic).
Arce wrote:What is their targeted audience? Whoever makes them the most money.
Exactly. And would it not be in a company's best interest to broaden the targeted audience, since it's directly proportional to monetary profit? If they hadn't been idiots and included features such as multitasking, they would have all of the ignorant morons onboard and people like us.

Gyro pretty much sums up on my thoughts of the iPad. I have little use for such a gizmo - wait till you get more features for the same price, the market is stable and products mostly bug-free. It's easier, can be cheaper and you won't feel like an idiot when Gen-3 comes out and your still on your old fat-bezel ugly Gen-1 and being put down for it by your fellow apple fan-boys.

I do the same with games, sadly for the developers and publishers. Wait a good while till the patches are out and the price drops, especially with specials. I still have little desire to play COD:MW2 for a long while yet for instance, but I know when it comes time to buy it I'll probably love it. I'm not going to pay for a sluggish bug-ridden game at the prices they come out, thank you very much.
