Re: Dropbox- good or bad?
I used it for quite a while, it is pretty usefull I think (and free!)
But it is not good for big files(20mb+) - it will just slow down all the other computers using that dropbox account (downloading as soon as it starts up)
I've never heard about sugarsync, so I don't know about that.

It's awesome. I use it all the time, and I seriously would recommend it to anyone who wants to make use of its awesome cloud power.
Quit procrastinating and make something awesome.

Re: Dropbox- good or bad?
No problem, and on topic I hadn't actually heard of Dropbox before. I'm not sure how you mean "good or bad", it depends on how you plan to use it and the sensitivity of the data to be stored I suppose.gamenovice wrote:thanks for that dandymcgee

Re: Dropbox- good or bad?
I doubt many companies use it. Usually projects are hosted in-house using some sort of repository for a slew of reasons.gamenovice wrote:i asked if dropbox was good or bad meaning if it was important to people in the game dv industry and was wondering how they usd it.

Re: Dropbox- good or bad?
I can tell you first-hand (I am on the ES team after all) that we are using an SVN repository to host everything: graphics, web stuff, toolkit and engine code. Again, a repository offers a number of advantages over simply uploading files somewhere. We can easily keep track of revisions (changes over time), revert to an earlier version if and when something gets screwed, and set up the whole deal on a new computer with a simple command. There's also the redundancy of everyone having a fairly up-to-date backup of everything in the event something were to happen to the server.gamenovice wrote:i didnt think of that...

Re: Dropbox- good or bad?
I use it quite a lot, both in my real job and for developing games. We have a couple of rep's in europe, and I use DropBox to update the main database from their local versions - their work area is actually their drop box location, I have access to it, and it's real handy to just go in and grab their stuff.
My drop box is accesible to the people I work with - when I have a demo, I stick it in my drop box, then people can include feedback documents, art folk can provide updates as they are ready, and it's a lot nicer than trying to keep things organised via email.
I use it for my diabetes control diary too - because I test while at work and at home on 2 different testers, so I just have a spreadsheet in my drop box that I can access from anywhere.
So it's mighty useful for me, but I can certainly see how there are better options for group project work - for personal use and lighter development work it's great.

Re: Dropbox- good or bad?
you make an excellent point Van-B. although major projects use SVN repositories as dandymcgee stated, its still really handy for handdling small project files.
ironically, i use it to hold all the valuable code for my wii homebrew engine and 2d editor(not done with it yet, itll take a while before i make a post of it here)

Re: Dropbox- good or bad?
I can't say I've ever used it for game development, but for music / video / large files it's a godsend, I use it all the time
