What should I do?

Post by THe Floating Brain »

I am in the process of writing an engine for a 2d RTS! :-) I want to make a space RTS with it but I want to put a creative twist on it allowing you to go inside the space ships, I am also looking into making a multiplayer explorer mode were there are planets you could explore (yes I am very ambitious). Here is were my conflict comes in, I am a single programmer on my team. I have been working for about 5 months and not gotten very far, I was wondering if it would be too much to make my engine capable of making (3d) third person shooter's or (2d) overhead shooter's? (for the parts where you would go inside ships). I hope I dont sound too much like a noob :/ (Experiance: C++ mostly console applications for 2.5 years, 1 year of HL2 mod dev (didn't get very far), RTS with game maker 8 (Still in dev), 2 years of programming pre-made robots with Logo, 6 weeks of programming lessons, space shooters with game maker 8, a small Java application, AVR's with C, A VERY small platformer with game maker 8. Languages: C++, C, some Java, Logo, Some Lua, GML, HTML, some Java Script, some apple script (PC user used a Mac at school and played with it), Some Assembly, some (original) BASIC(On my Intellivision computer :-) ). Education: Learned mostly from online tutorials antiRTFM(http://www.youtube.com/user/antiRTFM) , Documentation, the teacher from the 6 weeks of lessons.)(If anyone needs clarification let me know I sometimes have a hard time getting my point across.)

My first thought: it's not gonna happen. My second thought: a 2D RTS or top-down shooter is perfectly possible, but the 3d part definitely isn't going to happen.

Thank you, for your opinion :-) , Do you belive it would be more likely if I did the top down shooter after the RTS part?

My advice, is do the shooter first, they are less complex... More advice, make sure when you do your RTS you have a pretty clear vision of what you want, I was on a team and we were doing an RTS it made quick progress but died because we didn't know where to go from there

Thank you for your input :-) I will be sure to keep that RTS tip in mind. Anyone know how long these two parts should take? (The overhead shooter should be relitivily small)

depends how much time you spend on it each day, if you code a few hours a day, maybe 2 weeks for the shooter? maybe more maybe less, it all depends

It looks fine to me, but I'm not that great with designs ;)
And the name sounds cool, a little bit overkill, but hey, there's no kill like overkill.
