Well it's a decent start for a sprite, but the first thing that really jumps out at me is that he seems to be looking slightly upward.

its a little bit 'flat' looking. maybe add some shading (to give the head and torso shape) although this would add more colors to the pallette

I'm not any great pixel artist myself, but i think the shape of the body should be more organic, also in the 3rd dimension(shading).

Good start, needs more detail in general.

You should try to put his eyes a bit down. In the center of the face or maybe a few pixels below.
The different shades are a bit too similar. And it looks like you don't have any highlights.
You should always have at least 3 different shades for each color: a ground, one for shadows, and one for highlights

I tried giving him a smile to make him look less emo but then he looks kinda like a psychopath
