Terraria

Post by ZachO »

Hey everyone I'm back hopefully to begin posting more frequently. After the finals at school, science fair, research papers, tornadoes(thank god they just missed us in mid-lower Alabama) I haven't had a lot of time for gaming and programming. But, in the time of my absence one of the guys I'm subbed to on youtube has begun LP's on a "little" 2d game called Terraria. Now many will say that it is a minecraft clone(which I suspected at first as well) but if you watch the video's that follow the one below (the first of a current 22 videos) you will see that it is much more in depth and can supply more game play. I know that it is a high goal to aim for(gotta have goals) but I would love to attempt a 2d sandbox game like Terraria for a summer project as school is ending in 3 weeks though not as detailed. This being my first large project - something other than Pong, Tetris, Super Mario; I would like to at least create something that I can build off of later and create a FINISHED game(as I feel that I am truly never done with a game when I continue to add features).

BTW, sorry if this is in the wrong forum It's been a while.

Thanks,
ZachO

I was addicted to this game for the past few days! It's seriously an amazing game! Don't think of it as another Minecraft clone for those who don't know much about it, the only thing that's similar is the fact it uses blocks, and that you destroy and place them; otherwise, it's COMPLETELY different.

It has an RPG element to the game, upgrading your stuff, getting new and awesome weapons and armor. Fighting new enemies as you go deeper into caves, finding treasure, defeating bosses. This game has a lot to keep you hooked! Unfortunately though, it's linear in the fact that once you're done, there's really not that much to do... The worlds are finite and pretty small, and there is only so many things you can do until you have everything there is in the game.

You could create and build things, but there isn't really a drive to in this game; it's more about exploration. However, the developer and other members are going to work on expanding it! I hope to see some more amazing content in this game! It only took me a few days to get almost everything, but it's still a great game.

And I agree, ZachO, 2D > 3D :P

This game is win. I think it is more fun than minecraft, and I love minecraft.
22 hours total played since Friday night.....No comment....
Anyways, if anyone wants to play with me my steam ID is Girandsamich so just add me and I'll try my hardest to set up a custom server.
Shouldn't be too too hard, I just don't want to go through the bridging the modem thing that I had to do at my other house.
If some people want to play though, I'll be happy to do the server.

Yea its been a while since I've gotten on steam but i will add you I need some people to play with when I get it, because I haven't had a chance to get it. The only bad thing is that I'll have to run steam on my dual boot laptop because it only runs on windows and mac, which I only have 1 of, my other computers are all Linux...............................

Gah, yeah... I have to use my laptop just to play this game :(
I'd be happy to help the developers port it to C++ and OpenGL ;)

Yea I have the same wish but the developers have currently said they have no plans to port it to mac or linux unless done by a third party and it will be a long way down the road and they used c# because it would be a quick development process and so they could port it to xbla later. Oh, and did anyone here buy fortresscraft?

btw:
Why are so many new studios switching to XNA? (Magicka was developed in XNA too)

There's a very simple reason. They can have much faster development times and it's easy to publish on XBL Indie Marketplace.

All I know is that these games come at a great cost. The performance suffers in every instance. Magicka is an awesome game, but it drains resources like no other. I have games that are far more graphically intensive that have no moments of lag or endless CPU buzzing.

I totally agree with you. I think XNA is a great idea, and the blame for the lag is more on C# itself.
