Sega Master System?
Soo... I have always wanted a Sega Master System. I had never even played one (other than emulators) in my life. Kendall and I were out at a local underground gamestore this weekend, and I couldn't resist it. Finally with a job, I could afford one. I dropped $80 and got one with about 9 games (including the lightgun).
So far I know that I definitely need all of the Sonics and Phantasy Star. Anybody else know of more must-have SMS games?

How about Fantasy Zone, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic 1, Ys The Vanished Omens
Life is essentially about exploring, finding our way through a maze of faces, ideas..and different beers!

Got Phantasy Zone with it.
Oh shit, I forgot about Alex Kidd. And yeah, I knew there was a Golden Axe. So it's good?

I will take the liberty of mentioning Golvellius for TruFun.

Wooooooot! For the sake of others, I will post the same list of recommended games that I sent to Falco:GyroVorbis wrote:hurstshifter wrote:I will take the liberty of mentioning Golvellius for TruFun.

- Zillion - a one-of-a-kind platformer / puzzler. You have to find/memorize a code to unlock each room - explore the map, rescue some friends, and get the hell out before the motherfucker explodes! (good times.)
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World - a cornerstone of gaming for all SMS fans. Alex Kidd was Sega's answer to Mario before Sonic came along.
- Alex Kidd in Shinobi World - a mashup of Alex Kidd and Shinobi before mashups were cool, and just a solid platformer. This game still provides alot of influence on my current game, Rad Raygun.
- Sonic Chaos - exactly the same as the Game Gear version, but damn good.
- Asterix and the Secret Mission - (IMPORT) - A solid, polished platformer that was never released in the US. (And, thankfully, the SMS will play games from anywhere without a converter.) I got my copy from eBay that was sent from Australia. There are 3 games in the Asterix series, but this is my favorite. (Asterix, and Asterix and the Great Rescue)
- Great Baseball - blows away Bases Loaded, any day
- Double Dragon - actually lets you play 2 Player co-op, unlike the NES version
- Shinobi - classic.
- Ninja Gaiden - A complete 180 from the NES and arcade versions of Ninja Gaiden. No knock against them, but this version is awesome.
- Wonderboy III - A sidescroller / RPG, very polished and lots of fun
- Pyscho Fox - a rare platformer that's just damn good. Let's you switch between 4 characters in-game, to find the best way through the level.

Sonic Chaos is on its way. The Sonics are NOT cheap... I've been lurking on ebay for awhile waiting for a good deal on them.

That's more than any SNES game that I've ever seen.
It turns out that Sonic Blast was BRAZIL ONLY. It was released in 1997! That's after the N64! And it's an 8-bit Sonic game WITH KNUCKLES! Goddamnit, I want it soooo badly.

Re: Sega Master System?
Yup. The Sega Master System was HUGE in Brazil well into the late 90's. And by that time, Sega knew how to squeeze every little bit (no pun intended) out of that console. Hell, they even released Virtua Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 2 on the SMS in Brazil! And those are two titles that I've yet to get my hands on...people are asking rediculous prices on Ebay. I do, however, have Mortal Kombat for the SMS, which ain't bad at all for an 8-bit console.GyroVorbis wrote:It turns out that Sonic Blast was BRAZIL ONLY. It was released in 1997!
Another fun thing to collect for the SMS is the rip-off games, such as Dr. Hello. I picked this up a few months ago. It's a blatant rip-off of Dr. Mario, and it even has a picture of Dr. Wily on the box art. (yes, I'm dead serious...Dr. Fucking. Wily.) These games came from a company in Korea that found a loophole in the system. They also ripped off Super Mario Bros. with their "Super Boy" games.

Re: Sega Master System?
So I was at the local gamestore, when I saw my very first SMS card-based game. It was just Super-Tennis (and of course I bought it), but now I'm fucking amazed.
I wondered what the hell the card slot was on my first-gen Master System... finding out that a few early, obscure SMS games came out in CARD format instead of CARTRIDGE format gives a collector like me an immediate erection... I'm actually browsing Ebay now looking for more of them... I'm also particularly drunk on Jack Daniels, atm, so this is a teeeerrible idea. :D
Trufun, do you own any "card" SMS games? Once again the SMS never ceases to amaze me... I just bought the "Power-Base Converter" for the Genesis to play SMS games... I'm impressed that I could type my paypal password this drunk... It'll probably arrive in a few days, and I won't remember buying it...

Re: Sega Master System?
Ahh, I remember those, scarily thin little things the slotted into the front - at least on the first gen angular SMS, the SMS2 was more rounded and I've no idea where the slot was on that. The only card game I had was Spy vs Spy, good times playing that with no clue as to how it works, we had no instructions unfortunately.
I really liked Sonic on the SMS, it was damn impressive for such a humble console, I'd say Sonic is the best game for it. I just wish the damn thing had a better joypad, same goes for the Genesis, and the Saturn... did it really take Sega 3 consoles before making a decent controller!.

Yep, I've got a few card titles: Super Tennis, Spy vs. Spy, Teddy Boy, and.....(wait for it).....TRANSBOT!!!!!!!!!!GyroVorbis wrote:Trufun, do you own any "card" SMS games? Yes, TransBot is incredibly simple and repetitive, but strangly addictive.
