Dreamcast Fishing Rod

Post by Falco Girgis »

I've crawled out of my emo depression to make one last post before the end of school (Tuesday).

I've picked up another extremely rare and awesome Dreamcast peripheral today: the fishing rod. I'm happy to report that everybody I've talked to claims it gets input exactly like the controller (score!), and on account of all games that normally have D-pad support working with it, it must be true.

After Tuesday (assuming I can survive that long), I'll get to work on some homebrew or minigame or something that uses this newfangled device. I wonder if I've got a fettish for working with DC peripherals...

You poor school ridden fool. And you thought you would get out before me, BAh! I've been out for a week.

Anyway, the rod of fish. I wonder what it looks like and how it could translate the spinable reel into the same input as a standard controller. Wierd.

I'll get a picture when school is out. It actually looks damn cool.

I'm guessing the reel works like an L or R trigger and the faster you reel in is like pushing a trigger down harder (same with casting).

Not sure though, I'll disect it later on.

Yesh, it seems the triggers would do the job. That or it's just like the analog stick except always pushed on the rim.

No, the controller has a built in analog stick, so that isn't possible. I think the casting might even be a combination of the D-Pad (for direction) and a trigger (how hard you cast).

I'm happy that Sega has decided to make lots of their peripherals get input like controllers. It makes it easier on the programmer and imagine how cool it is to play Sambe De Amigo with a dance mat (kids, don't try this at home) or walk around on Shenmue by stepping on the arrows?

I haven't really had time to screw around with games using the rod, but I'm betting you can do the exact same (play Samba and Shenmue with it).

But yeah, I'll get you juicy pictures after tuesday (last day of school).

Anyway, gotta study for exams.

Me holding the DC Fishing Rod.

There's the picture I promised. You can also see it in the death topic in the gaming forum.

What do you think? I think it's really sleek and sexy looking. It's also a crap load of fun to play with.
