Yeah... I understand. I'm just not really sure yet.

I've read so much about how much less game programmers make when they work even harder. If I stayed on my current career path and worked as a government engineer, I'd be making fairly decent money.

Whereas I'm sure being a game developer would probably cut my potential salary quite a bit... =/

edit: well... I take that back. I'm looking at 2007 surveys, and the ranges look the exact same as what a government engineer would get paid. Hah.

Yeah, the bad thing I've heard about being a developer in the gaming industry is the crazy hours...

For the most part, I work 9 - 6 everyday. That wouldn't be the case as a game developer.

Good luck yo

No matter what I have no doubts about the fact that you'll still find time to make awesome personal projects Falco. It's really a matter of what you think you can handle later in life as a permanent career hah.

let me demystify some of these thoughts :) I work in the Gaming Industry as a Software Engineer, and while yes the hours are long during certain times, we do work normal 9-5 hours usually, but there is a level of dedication that goes beyond those hours. I am pretty much on-call 24/7 as when my shit breaks I am expected to fix it and its something major I do come in on the weekends or holidays and fix the issue. The pay can be low but that is made up for in a lot of ways, we get so much stuff for free, so much cool stuff to mess around with in our free time or when we feel like taking breaks. I mean it is really hard to describe the environment but its a lot of fun and well worth it if you can get into it.

It does as i said before require a level of dedication that most people just have a hard time dealing with, its very demanding at times and does require that you know WTF you are talking about and in the end it is nice to see your name in the credits and millions of people playing your game.
