So your saying you want to edit things like Linux? Most of the open source projects are in C++ so you would still need to learn it.

If that's really what you want to http://sourceforge.net/ would probably be a better place to ask questions. I think what your saying you want to do is write applications which has little to do with editing open source projects, it's standard to use C++ for this as well though I'm not saying you can't use things like Visual Basic. I wrote software in VB and sold it on ebay, so it's kinda useful, though many of my buyers complained about the speed of my applications. Now if you want to write web applications then Java is the way to go and there is money to be made in that.

I'm not making a game atm. I'm making the tools to make the game (software). There's a fine line between the two.
