I think Spelunky http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=4017.0 is pretty funny, and it is made with game maker.

He's saying it's a pretty cool game which was made with a program (GameMaker).

Maybe i have misunderstood this thread. First time i read through it seemed like you dident think it was possible to make great games in game maker.

I agree that it is more fun if you create a game from scratch. Also i dont think that you have many oppertunitys for optimizing you game and stuff like that in game maker.

The point of the thread was that it was that programmers HATE to be asked what "program" they use, then they make their own. It's like an insult, almost.

It is a lot like an insult... to us it sounds like we're doing something 'the easy way', but to them, it probably sounds like 'wow that's great, how do I get in on the action without doing too much work?'

You don't really know the effort that goes into building any application unless you try it yourself, I think people are just naive (I have a friend who used to assume that programming was easy because I could do it...then I showed him some of my books  )

Naive? I assume people are a combination of ignorant, arrogant, and stupid. Favoring the last one. ;)

There was a time when I used a program called RPG-Toolkit to make small rpgs... (http://www.rpgtoolkit.com)

You can think of it as an alternative to RPG-Maker.

It was pretty neat at the time, but it was admittedly very restrictive. Interestingly, It uses a prorietary scripting language called RPG-Code which is similar in syntax to C/C++, but very slow indeed.
