Omg when you blew into the cartridge harder and started playing it like a harmonica Freakin amazing. You should've tried putting a pencil in it that used to always work for me.

I think it's similar to how trufun was using a penny. You just shove something either between the cartridge and the holder, or the outside of the holder and the inside of the NES to hold it down all the way. After seeing the video of you taking it apart I'm pretty sure all this does is gives the cartridge better contact by holding it tight against the circuitry in the back.
