CS != competent programmer.
Every CPE major I've ever met has serious issues with CS majors. I wonder if they have self esteem issues or something.

What did my quote have to do with that? I didn't attack CS, so maybe you have self esteem issues since I'm getting a bachelors of "Science and engineering" while you have just a "bachelors of science."

;)

edit: Believe me, also. CPE != competent programmer either. Look at my "Design philosophy" topic to see what I think of both first year students. :D

You're right, I took the comment out of context. I'm just very used to being attacked by CPE majors, I jumped the gun. I think its fair to say any schooling does not automatically make you amazing at something.

Far from it, in fact. I think that if you're not amazing already, you won't get amazing by listening to other people's lectures on other people's stuff.

but if its a good teacher that helps you grasp the concepts, so that you can take your understanding higher, then certainly it will be easier to become amazing?

But I think Maurader's trying to get at, The only thing that can make you amazing, is you? (not real sure, but thats what I got out of it...)

That's part of it. If you don't want to be amazing, you won't get amazing. Listening to someone's lecture won't make you want to be amazing --even if you want to be-- unless it is someone amazing and they want to make you amazing (both of these are rare on their own, in combination, even rarer). If you want to be amazing, listening to a lecture is one of the worst ways to becoming amazing. There are much more effective methods, such as doing something. Lectures might help you fine-tune your amazingness, but honestly, in my experience, they neither generate amazing people nor leap someone from mediocre to amazing. You may find something there to make yourself amazing with, like linking two ideas from two different classes, but you have to find it and you won't truly be amazing until you put those together and rock the world.
