One of the very few good things obama is doing is controlling student loans, and making it better for students.

Man, tuition in the US is crazy. It's expensive here when compared to many European countries, but 4-10k/year for undergrad programs pales in comparison to 40k. It's not like we don't have any programs like that - but they're primarily private vocational institutes since most of the big research universities, mid-size universities/colleges, and several technical institutes are publicly funded.
You paint those numbers into a pretty clear picture. Going back to school, I chose a place that's just over 4k for 1st year and my largest classes are 40 people (including the engineering students who were let into physics courses over-capacity, the regular limit is 35). The staff are also incredibly friendly and willing to make time for students.
Co-op programs are your friend. I'm definitely realizing this now. I have several friends who've paid for most/all of their tuition by doing co-op programs and some who've had money left over for other things. That may not be true in the US with higher tuition rates, but co-op programs will also net you work experience and higher likelihood of having a job as soon as you graduate (plus you'll be making more on average, sometimes quite a bit more, than other grads since you have hands-on experience and often will have already worked with the company that's hiring you). Some programs obviously lend themselves more to co-op than others. Engineering and comp sci are both great for this (some schools here actually makes co-op a mandatory part of their engineering programs).
You can do it - but avansc makes a good point. You have to be realistic about your finances. There ARE solutions, but it's takes you thinking and doing something about it.

Thats what I love about Caltech, small classes, even smaller than my highschool. But it costs a butt load to pay for. Caltech has tons of companies that recruit from it, the summer program works directly with JPL, which I plan to work at after college if I don't get into a game company. The only downside of Caltech is the cost. I live like 15 minutes away from it so I can commute after the first year (but personally I prefer to dorm all 4 years). The research lab is like 7/11, open 24 hours a day. They have a great big gym, I would love to go to Caltech. The city of Pasadena has some good stuff. They have international studies programs, inter college programs with UCLA, USC, UCSD, Stanford, Occidental and other colleges. That seems like the ideal place for me. I can find ways to pay for it.
Code: Select all
Tuition $34,989
Student Fees 1,293
Room (contract price) 6,441
Board (5 days/week) 4,956
Additional Meal Allowance (est.) 1,413
Books and Supplies (est.) 1,323
Personal Expenses (est.) 1,974
Total $52,389
Thats lots of money. I would have to talk to my counsellor to help me figure it out.
Right now, I am looking over the Apps, but I only have 1 extra curricular that has anything with math and science... Robotics. Now what can I do? Will that be sufficient. I take robotics very seriously, I think trying to do more will just hinder me

yea, well you just described every major college campus in america.

Probably one of the best and cheapest schools you can go to would be Virginia Tech or Georgia Tech.

One thing I have against Georgia Tech. How racist are those people from Georgia against Asians? Its cool that they have a football team (I can try out, but probably will not make it because I am really undersized... 6' 215lb). Nevertheless, its still on the list of colleges I am applying to. I still got a year to build up my transcript. I am thinking of publishing a "research" paper regarding robot vision and stereo vision. I am working on a system for this year's Robot competition. Georgia sound cool, honestly I admit I have a fear of failure. Which in turn is linked to the fear of change. I am very reluctant to try something new, that is just my personality. I have not lived anywhere other than Southern California and Korea. (Hell Im not even an American Citizen, I came here with a student visa (Thats not for sure, but I am sure its something like that) I have a green card, so I am legal, and can apply to colleges) Now going to any college is a big step in life, why not just take a slightly bigger step and go out of state? You realize only 2 schools on my list are out of state? But Georgia Tech is a big college too.
Personally I am just scared. Caltech is my # 1 because it is literally 15 minutes away from my house, close enough for my comfort. Also its the arguably best engineering college in the world (MIT and Caltech are neck and neck).
I read over the Applications, personally I feel kind of under the standard. I see like 5 spaces for Math and Science related EC, I only have 1. A whole essay regarding research papers (I plan to publish one). And a section for Awards and Honors (I got none, unless a letter in football, or robotics count)...
Another big plus for me for Caltech is that it has close ties with JPL. I have been wishing to work there ever since I visited on a field trip in 3rd grade. They have a summer program that allows the undergrad students intern/research at JPL while getting paid (not very much though).
Also I ****ed up my GPA, its around 3.17 weighted as of last year... I need to ace every class from now on
Also how would I get a teacher to get me recommendation? I only have one teacher that I see after schools and stuff (robotics teacher, I'm just in the club, he seems to like me, but I honestly disappointed him at the end of last year) I only see all the other teachers during class time.
FML, calculated my overall GPA assuming I get all A from now on... Gotten to the point that I can't ever raise my GPA above 3.6 weighted... FML

Look dude, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you are more likely to get hit by lightning than getting into cal tech or MIT, and thats fine. Shit, I knew a kid who got 1600 on the SAT, had like a 5+ GPA and all these crazy things in HS. and he did not get into one of those.
Trust me when I tell you, your life wont miraculously be better if you get into cal tech or the like. You can get the job at JPL if you go to any decent college. Shit, people with nobel prizes went to "mediocre" schools. The dude who started SAS, Jim Goodnight, worth like 9 billion dollars, went to the red neck school which i go to, NCSU.
So dont get lured in by this ivey league bull shit..

I Still have a chance, the end result is not the only thing they see, they see my transcript, which will show an increase in grades. I will make it, trust me

Get your head on straight and LISTEN to the guys with experience man. Paying more is not going to help you later in life one bit. You can make professional connections from any school in the world, so why put yourself 200K in the hole before you even start your life? If there's one regret I have in going to college it's not knowing enough to have compared prices. Everyone tells you "don't worry about the costs, just get yourself into college".. but again we're the ones paying it back in the end, not them.

For now, my goal is to get the best grades in my classes and get the best scored on the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and the SAT IIs. I will frequently refer to so counsellor to help with the college process. Hey, at least shes not saying "You can't apply to Caltech because you are a dumbass" or something like that. There is the Calgrant, its not a loan, but a grant, that can help, there are several scholarships I can get through Robotics, which will also help.
Here is a thing I heard about life, to earn money, you got to spend money. Sorry my philosophy is go big to go home. I still got schools on my list which is fairly inexpensive as my priority, Cal Poly Pomona and Georgia Tech. I will find ways to pay for college.

We're not saying you can't do it, we're saying if you don't, don't beat yourself up.

When the worst comes to the worst, I'll go to Cal Poly Pomona and transfer into Caltech or go graduate school there doing research. Personally I am very interested in robotics research. I can do that in conjunction to working at JPL. I personally believe nothing should hinder you from your goals and passions. Whether it is money or the grades, if you want something, you will get it; if you didn't get it, that meant you didn't try hard enough. Impossible is nothing

It's disheartening to read this topic. This is because I feel you are
1) Going to college for the absolute wrong reasons
2) Extremely ignorant when it comes to college acceptance policies
3) Unreasonable with your list of applications
4) Under the impression your senior year will have any impact at all on your college entrance decisions
I would be absolutely more than happy to share my opinions on the matter if asked...However, my intention is not to belittle you, nor your school intentions, so I think I'll stick this one out unless I'm positive my opinion will have beneficial effects rather than negative, and are wanted. ;p
As for what qualifies me to give my opinion?
I am currently close friends with two gentlemen at MIT (and had the fortune of actually teaching them to code when they were younger) as well as several at Georgia Tech, and happen to know exactly what it took for each to get in. I just recently went through all of that application bullshit, and am now enrolled in college making more money just by showing up for class than I've made in my whole life working. I had the fortune of attending one of the top high-schools in the US, so students making it into MIT, Vanderbilt, Duke, Harvard, West Point etc. aren't uncommon at all in my graduating class. Also, I'm one of those bullshit students with a 5+ GPA, and an Academic Resume that would make a deer shit ice-cream.

Why settle for less? Never be satisfied with your performance, you can always get bigger, stronger, faster, smarter. Never be satisfied; if you are satisfied, you will start losing the zeal and passion. Personally I believe my purpose is not wrong (of course everyone believes their ideas are always right). Sure I may be ignorant about the college process, but isn't it the same for the rest of the highschool students in the nation? How is my list unreasonable? Does it mean I can't apply to these classes because I matured later in life and did not realize the importance of school until my sophomore year? Don't let anyone say you can't do something. Sure what if my Senior year will not impact me? I got a whole Junior year to go through before I even apply. Well sorry if I didn't mention it before, I am a Junior. You may ask why I am so worried about college; I am worried because I care. You should be more disturbed if I didn't worry than trying to reach high.

Well I made a decision that I hope I will not regret; I chose to drop football 2nd semester and go into the robotics class. That means I will not be playing football my senior year; I know I will get so much crap from my team mates and friends for doing that. I will be focusing only on academics and robotics. Personally I feel that this is a wiser decision than to stay in football. My mentality is that I will not be playing football out of highschool; at least not division 1 schools. I will be programming for the rest of my life, why hinder myself? I have talk to my counsellor and she thinks its a great idea to invest in my future; my robotics teacher also agrees its fine. But however he did ask me where I wanted to go to college; I told him my top 3, then he asked me if I knew anyone from Caltech. I do no have any connections what so ever; does it really require good connections? Another question, will it look bad on my transcript to see that I dropped football and making robotics my only extra curricular? My counsellor told me it was fine that robotics is a great extra curricular. I estimate that I will be spending 5-6 hours a day for robotics; even more than I did for football. Totalling about 30-36 hours a week during the 6-7 weeks we have for build period.
If you told me 3 years ago that I will quit football and stay with robotics when I become a Junior; I would not have believed you. Its is a hard decision to make honestly; most of my friends are from football, if I quit man who knows what will happen. This shows how passionate I am about robotics, but honestly I am worn out from football, physically and mentally. I have tendinitis on both knees, dislocated both of my shoulders multiple times, 3 times in the last 3 weeks. Mentally, I am depressed. Last night, my coach passed away; I had mad respects for that man, he inspired me. I just heard the new today, I feel terrible. He has been a coach at my school for 50+ years, was the first head coach and has not left until the say he leaves this earth. He was 80 something, he broke his leg during a scrimmage when a player fell on his leg; that can take a long time to heal especially for an old man. He still come to practice everyday, man I have made respects for him. Last saturday, he had an operation regarding his heart or something; I assume he passed away from the complications of the operation. He inspires me; he called into my head coach that he wanted to come to practice on Monday, literally 2 days after the operation, then he passes away Tuesday night in his sleep. I want to be as passionate as he was; he is an inspiration.
He also was a Korean War veteran; he was a pilot in the Korean war. Me being Korean, I thank him for his services.
Man it just hurts to just type this; I just had to vent it somewhere.
I dedicate my last season for him
