Don't get me wrong, the Military is good and all, fighting for our "freedom".
But it's not for me... I'm more of a peacefull kind of guy... no not a hippie :nono:
Have you ever noticed that people like Osama bin Ladin have vowed to do everything that they possibly can if it means to kill more Americans? Ever thought of that?

Not that there's anything wrong with peace, but refusing to act when a real threat is there is just stupid! :nono:

 Oh. That's what you were saying. I agree with you, then. :) I'm all for staying where it's safe and not having hundreds of holes shot through me. Though I'd like the pay of possibly working on missile guidance systems or something like that. :) Stuff like that must pay well.

:) I feel that I am very aware of my own shortcomings, including the ones that could get me killed if I make a wrong decision. Sure, I'd like supreme power, but not if there's someone else with it. I like easy victories if my life is on the line. ;)

He was talking to me...
I had a signature at one point saying this:
My old sig wrote:Comparing me to the other twelve-year-olds is like comparing Captain Kirk to the Teletubbies.
or something like that.

I checked into all the university's that are within 5 states of my hometown. They all are around 35k - 43k a year in tuition. My family makes to much to qualify for financial aid but to less to pay for my college.

I looked into the whole going into the war thing and to tell you the truth, No air force troops have died in the last 4 months. Mainly just Marines and Army members because they are on the front line. First the Army gets sent into war, then marines, then National Guard, then Navy, then the air force. And even the air force troops don't see any action really. All the air force does is set up communication, gather intell, Fly UAV's (Unmanned planes). Other than that mainly the air force stays in the U.S trying to advance technology.

But the benefits are nice.
  • 1. Free schooling
    2. Free Room and Board
    3. Free Food (Air Force has the best food my dad was a marine and sometimes he had to go to the AF bases for aircraft schooling and he said they got the best shit around haha)
    4. Physically Fit (run 2 miles a day, Do a work out routine for 2 hours then go to work)
    5. I get paid 1.5grand every month im in the AF, that's 18k a year.
    6. Boot camp is only 6 weeks
    7. 1 month payed vacation a year (most company's offer 10days paid)
    8. Free medical, Dentistry work, all that good stuff
    9. Travel anywhere in the world i want to.
    10. Free Flights (Say im heading home, i can hop on the nearest C-10 heading to WA and bam free flight worth 400$ and i skip security and all that cause im in the AF.)
    11. Ladys throw them self at men in uniform, Not saying im going to sleep with all the sluts but i could meet the person id fall in love with
    12. It would make me grow up.
    13. On the job experience from the military
There's more but i cant think of them all.

Aeolus, Wait a sec....you're in Washington right? 35-50K annually for school? You've got to be looking at private universities because that's absolutely obscene.

The University of Washington has one of the most respected engineering departments in the United States(Public and private). They're in the top 5 public schools for Computer Science/Electrical Engineering. You'll be on nothing but the right track if you go there and get some information and check the requirements for entry into the College of Engineering at UW.

Besides, annual cost is roughly $13k if you stay home. Do what you need to in order to get in, there is nothing that can not be done (a good motto if you want to be successful at game development as well). A good class rank from a graduate of CSE or EE at U of W will look very impressive.

As an adendum (and DO *NOT* attempt to say that I am bashing the armed services, I greatly respect ALL our uniformed folks)
------
The vast majority of the technology that the armed services employ comes from private civilian contractors (Probably with degrees from public schools such as the one you're seeking). Eg: Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrupp Grumman, General Electric, Bell/Textron, etc...

However, in war time, the potential loss of life (while probably small) is still there, and a dead programmer is of no use for anyone. Not even considering the emotional toll it will exude on everyone close to you. It's a real decision and not one to be taken lightly. Either way, your availability to work on game projects while in the armed services will be VERY minimal. So I think you'd be taking a few steps back on that one.

Yeah i know its a fine as hell school. The thing is every University in washington (public or not) are charging 35k - 50k a year, I don't have that kind of money and i dont want to pay it off for many years after im out of school.

I would have to take 2 years of community college and the S.A.T's just to have a small chance of being accepted into any University that teaches programming.

As for the technology that the armed services has (as in boeing) is not bad quality. My dad is the lead manager in Boeing in Portland, OR. Also i wasn't planning on programming games in the military, I'm not even sure that i want to program games as a profession. I might just get a job in Boeing after i get out of the AF as a programmer. They make really good money and it has ton's of job security. I just thought it would be cool programming games in off time.

Where are you getting these tuition figures from?? Either you're misinterpreting the actual cost or you're looking in the wrong places.

According to University of Washington, their annual tuition rates are around $13k. (Thats per year ~6.5k/semester)

Edit: Looking at your post, I think you misinterpreted just about everything I said. lol.

Well then you misinterpreted. That'd be 35-50K for your entire college career. Not per year. :)
