You remember when you could walk in to a gamestore and buy a game and you knew it was going to be fun.
I've notice that my Game buying has went down in the past years one from the rise of the price, but real reason is that game developers spend to much time on the graphics then the game play.
There is a Elite few of games that balance it out.

My favorite are

Gears of war

Halo series

CoDseries

Deadspace

Ratchet&Clank series

GTA series

What games do you believe balance out Graphics with gameplay ?

i like the old school 2D games.....alot of younger gamers dont appreciate how graphics was irrelevant back in the day and it was all about the gameplay.im not saying there arent games that have good gameplay but it is alot more complex than it used to be.

I beg to differ.

I grew up in the 8-bit era, and graphics have ALWAYS been relevant. Even in the NES days, my friends and I would love comparing the graphics quality from game to game. And, the first time I saw some early screenshots of SNES games, my jaw hit the floor. Not to mention the first "3D" consoles like Jaguar, 3DO, and Saturn. Compared to today's graphics, these consoles look rough, but back then, they looked AMAZING.

Damn I love gaming. :P

... I nearly wet myself when I saw Knuckles Chaotix on Sega 32x and Mario Clash for Virtual Boy--THOSE WERE SOME DAMN FINE GRAPHICS!

Knuckles Chaotix. Now there's a game that never got its fair share. It got ripped to shreds in the magazines, but I really liked it.

Does any game dev here feel like games aren't as fun as before they started working towards game deving? I kinda feel like this shroud of mystery has been lifted and don't get me wrong, games are still fun as hell, but I find myself picking games apart like I never did before. Like, I'd sit there and just manipulate the A.I. to win a battle instead of thinking of a legitament strategy, or I'd be trying to figure out how they did something or how I could do that myself.

It doesn't ruin anything for me, but I definitely don't have as many "Wow!" moments. I dunno, my random thought. /rant

Yeah I hear ya... Often times when I'm playing a game, I'm thinking, "Oh, I see how they did that..." or "How would I implement this?" I can still get caught up in a game, but half the time I'm analyzing things.

Yea I do the same thing but I actually enjoy it, Now when I'm playing a game not only do I get the original content and gameplay but also new puzzles to solve whenever I see something interesting.

Well, when I play games just for fun I notice things I wouldn't have before, and it doesn't really take away from the experience. I really think about specific things they could have done differently that I believe would have made it a better game. Not just things like 'tighten up the graphics!" or "better story" but like, level design, use of sound effects. Stuff that I would normally just notice under the skin, and not actually realize it.

But then there are games that I'll play just to find out what makes them so great. For example, I recently played through Mega Man II trying to figure out what made it so much better than all the other games like it.

Find something special in Megaman 2 when you looked?

Yes, actually. I was comparing it today a modern game the brought out similar emotions. That game for me was Prince of Persia. They have their obvious similarities, and their obvious differences. But they both are difficult games, and neither of them seem to aggravate me to the point where I just want to stop playing; every time I died I just wanted to play more. Its really just small things, that little extra touch that do that. Level design for both of them is a huge one. They are fun to play, challenging, so I feel a real sense of accomplishment form beating a level. What I am having a hard time figuring out, is how all the pieces fit together.

Haha, this is probably reading as really shattered. I am trying to type up my notes into something coherent and don't really think I am succeeding. I'll try to sum it up real quick. Perfect controls, if they were a little off it would make a world of difference. That extra time the developers put into that really shows. The great level design I tried to explain but failed. Its really hard for me to put these subtle things that separate a good game from a great one into words. Maybe the best way is just that, its the subtle things that make the largest difference.

Hahaha. Wow. You complain about how game devs focus on graphics and then put Halo in your list? It's obvious the second two halos were marketing ploys, and totally uninspired. The insane development costs were from marketing and graphics production, not from bungie needing more developers to flesh out the game (seeing as how the second and third one had basically the same gameplay).

But I digress. You want balance?

Rome: Total War
Supreme Commander
Crysis (story was pretty lame, but the gameplay was insane fun)
Bioshock
Fallout 3
Dead Space (from what I hear, haven't had the chance to dip into it yet)
Team Fortress 2
Warhammer: Online

Yeah.

- thief
- monkey island (tho its not really about gameplay, but the story and jokes)
- starcraft is a example of what a game should be.
- doom 1 and 2
- all the prince of persia games are amazing
- unreal tournament 1 (best of all of them)
- wacky wheels , apogee made some of the best games around.
- how many of you know a game called abuse, that a good game
