So I got a new computer...

Yeah baby, its been a while since I've posted ;)

So here it is... The cold hard truth:

After using windows for most of my computer life, I've decided to convert. I got a Mac! :shock2:
I've used Linux for quite a while side-by-side Vista as well, but I've never used a Mac... which BTW is a true
Unix-3 certified OS (code-named Darwin).

I switched mostly because I found a good deal on black friday, so there. It's a complete monster, the latest
17" (holy crap that big) laptop model from apple (MB766LL/A). The specs are:

2.5 Ghz Penryn processor.
4-GB DDR2-RAM
nVidia Geforce 8600M GT with 512MB of GDDR3 SDRAM
320 GIG HDD
1900x1200-ish Glossy monitor

I tried Call of Duty 4 on it, and it ran pretty sweet :D

I don't mean to boast with the above, but in all modesty I've never owned an actual desktop, just laptops. The one I was using before was a Gateway m-1617 with 1200x720 1.9 Ghz AMD, 2-GB RAM, 230 GB HDD and ATI integrated graphics card.
Before that I ran a Toshiba 8200, with 256MB of RAM and 60GB HDD!!! Don't get me wrong, I've used Desktops before a lot, and my brother (who lives with me) owns a nice rig (I bought him a monster intel processor not too long ago for his gaming).

There is one moral in this bit of drivel of mine: I've always looked down on Macs, subconsciously, and I think many other people do as well.

I've found (through hands on experience with various laptops) that Macs are the fucking sexiest, most beautiful pieces of hardware that I've ever touched (notwithstanding my PS3 ;) ). I mean, the screen adjusts to the lighting in a particular room... SEAMLESSLY! So I want to say to people to give Macs a chance. Although expensive, they are worth it when it comes to quality and experience.

That is why I'm afraid, because people say once you go Mac, you never go BACK!! Running Vista/Xp and then experiencing Mac OS X just makes Windows look (and feel) pathetic. I swear the only reason Windows is still dominant is because of legacy programs, and games...

On the dev side of things, I'm in the process of setting up allegro,SDL, and a whole host of development libraries for use in Xcode (analogous to Visual Studio, but for Macs).

So I just wanted to let people know that I'm no longer primarily a windows coder, I'll be moving to Mac now ;)

On that note, are there any Mac users/coders here?

That's weird, because I just bought a new computer too, and should be coming next week sometime! We can be new computer buddies =P

Anyway, I love Macs, and I love OSX. But, I don't use it for anything really... That's why I have a PC with XP, because everything I use is windows based! But enjoy OSX, and if you game dev you should check out Unity. A couple of my buddies swear by it, and have made some amazing games with it, like Paper Moon! http://infiniteammo.ca/blog/paper-moon-demo-released/ check it out!

God damn. If many more respectable developers around here join the dark side, I might be a little more tempted to join some day...

maybe...

macs are nice. i dont kn ow if they are the sexiest, thats just an opinion.
as for development, meh. id stick with windows. although i hear many good things about xcode.

macosx is very nice, stable, robust. but so is xp.

i hate it when people say macs are better or xp is better, they are not the same thing so you cant really compare them.

and you said the only reason windows is still around is becaue of games and legacy programs. hahah. silly.
even if that were true that is still (estimation) 70 percent of the market. and the PC is the most developed platform in the world. nothing comes close (on a professional/ business level, i know lots of stuff for linux is developed. but 90% of that is shit)

i woudent have gotten the 17'' thought. its to big. its not a notebook. its just a foldable laptop. it has nothing that the 15'' (or whatever it has),
i would have gone with the smaller version and just got a 21'' wide screen when im working at my desktop.

but i really could not justify spending 3000 on a laptop, ouch.

Lulz :worship:

Relax Avansc, RELAX! I never said I'll be leaving the Window programming scene, I just said that's not the principal anymore for me. And all the statistics you mentioned are probably right, so just RELAX DUDE  hahah

Falco, just give in already. A Mac is calling for you to succumb ;)

It shouldn't be that much of a big deal, since OS X runs on intel's architecture now. You probably can try to install it in one of your machines by downloading the OS off of torrents. But the mac quality of hardware man... its awesome.

Falco, thanks for implying I'm a respected programmer. Really, I consider myself a lurker here more than anything ;)
That will change once school is done... lots of homework right now

On that note, since I'll be doing some heavy Mac coding in the months to come, I'll like to port some of my stuff over to Mac in the meanwhile. If you guys want a Mac port later (Waaaayyy later) of whatever (not elysian shadows, I know you guys don't trust anyone like that) I'm game, just to let you know. Now, let me get back to studying...

I don't really like Macs so you won't see me joining the dark side...ever :nono:

As for devving it goes Linux, Windows, Mac(gonna need to get access to a mac if I want to make a build)

The only time on windows is when I'm in school or making sure my engine stills compiles on it :) I haven't even tried a mac build

there is a bunch of development on linux. but in the industry 80% i would comfortably say is done on PC. ie. windows based computer.

I would definitely prefer having my huge case that I can open up and upgrade parts quickly and whenever I want. I don't have anything against macs, but the newer ones with all of the components jammed into the monitor would really piss me off when something stopped working...
