I want an MMORPG. >:(
And I can never find one I really like, dern it. When I was younger I used to play a lot of free ones, and I've tried Everquest, WoW, City of Heroes, and Ragnarok Online, and out of everything I've played RO was the most fun for me. Probably because I had a bunch of friends all playing too.
Anyone know any interesting ones that are out? I'm getting really tired of all the anime-themed ones listed on On RPG.
My wallet prefers free, but I could probably afford to pick up an mmo for a bit since I have a job. 8D
No EVE Online, thx.

Re: I want an MMORPG. >:(
I have yet to find one to get me to pay monthly for one... though to be fair, I only played Star Wars Galaxies and the controls scared me and I never went back. I REFUSE to play WoW due to the evils and soul sucking that does(lost a good friend to it). But being that I'm a huge Star Wars nerd, I love the KOTOR games and I'm really pissed off that they went for the cash cow that is MMOs, instead of the stand alone sequels, but because of all this I may try it out and who knows. I just don't have time to really invest into these games though... I dunno, Kotor has to be damn good.

Hmmm no eve that kills one of my recommendations, what about guild wars its not bad for a free to play game no monthly payments. as for some free mmorpgs there is Regnum Online,Tantra Online,Atlantica Online,Q-World, There is a website with a bunch of free mmorpg reviews when I remember what it is I will post the link.
also another mmorpg its not out yet but it started as an indie project and has now got funding that is looking good and really promising for a indie mmorpg.
They used to do a show it was like 10 episodes following there progress.

Mage, why don't you wait for the first group of 12yr olds to make their multi-billion dolloar MMO with RPGMaker like the rest of the world is? Geez, art takes time... with a team of 32 artists, 12 music guys who know how to download midi's from google, and a crack team of people who call themselves the team lead, we should expect this ubar masterpiece in about 5 secs after you die from waiting... as soon as they find that one programmer that is.

Re: I want an MMORPG. >:(
I actually had just gotten back into Runescape lately, but I can't get anyone to play it with me. XD
It's interesting seeing Runescape develop over the many, many years.
( I remember my 12-yo cousin logging on and chasing guys, because they were "cute" XD )
I've been playing The Mana World a bit, but it's so under-developed it's hard to play.
Mirage games are pretty interesting, sometimes, but still way too bare-bones for me.
And I don't get the appeal of WoW. I was in Ron Gilbert's guild, and I still thought the game were horribly boring!
Tauren Warrior, FTW.

I've played my fair share of MMOs in the past, and my most favorite, by far, is Ultima Online. It's a 2D isometric MMO that has SO MUCH depth. Your character doesn't level; instead, everything is skill-based. This works out nicely because you can play with friends without the fear of being "left behind." In Everquest and WoW, it becomes an addictive chore, and you feel like you HAVE to plow through levels just to keep up. In UO, things were different...
You can pretty much do whatever you want in the game. You don't HAVE to be fighter, you can just sit around and be some asshole chef if you want to. Yep, you can bake bread, poison it, leave it out for people, and watch them eat it and die! Or you can be a thief and hide in dungeons and steal shit from people. Or you can chop down trees, make furniture, and help people decorate their houses.
The game had a much greater sense of an "alternate world" - not just some multiplayer combat zone infested with mobs. But, because of it's flexibility, UO is by no means a "carebear" game, its full-on PVP and there are some evil bastards lurking. (and eventually I was one of them. )
Anyways, I haven't played it in years, but it was a blast! To my knowledge, people still play it, but I'm not sure how much the dynamics have changed.

Aye, it always sounded interesting to me. I think we were going to try a player server once, but for some reason never got around to it.
Though the PVP / difficult does kind of scare me away from playing, esp since I don't know anyone else who does.

Re: I want an MMORPG. >:(
May I ask why you want one?
In my past experiences, I don't want one. As a matter of fact, I'm frightened as hell to get involved with them. I keep my distance.
Every time that I do find one that I like, addiction sets in, I lose my social life, as well as my drive to do anything productive with my spare time.
Everybody that I know who is addicted to an MMO would be better off otherwise. It's sad to see people come home from work and do nothing but sit on their asses playing an online game. I have seen them affect grades, social lives, sex drives, motivation for pursuing other interests, etc.
It's just not something that I would like to get involved with at this point in my life. I stay away from MMOs like I stay away from drugs. They are very similar to me.

Stay away from StarWarsGalaxies, they messed it up royal, I played it 3 years ago, then promptly closed my account when they messed it up.
I agree with the previous statements, MMOs are no good at all, the people I see play them (mainly WoW) seem to just be obsessed, and I rarely talk to them, because all they talk about is WoW.
anyway you're a programmer Godammit, get programming!
Seriously though... I'm not going to make any judgements on people who play MMOs, I just personally find them disatissfying and empty, I would much rather use the internet much more practically (like I am right now )

I think I can program pretty well, it's my compiler that needs convincing!

And now a joke to lighten to mood :D
I wander what programming language anakin skywalker used to program C3-PO's AI back on tatooine? my guess is Jawa :P

Guild Wars was OK (no monthly fee), Ultima Online sounds better.
I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the book would not be destroyed as I had planned.

Re: I want an MMORPG. >:(
I don't know, I've NEVER been addicted to an MMO like that, and I think it's just the sort of wanting something to grind on, where it'll actually be online and "matter". I'm not worried about being addicted to anything. There's just some draw there for me.
I miss playing Ragnarok Online on a player server, having my own guild, competing against others in the server of less than 50 people to capture castles. Randomly going through dungeons with others. Leveling up my l33t skillz. :P
Plus, socializing with friends, I guess. It's sort of like how all of my ex's friends and him play D&D, except I find board games tedious and in need of a computer. ;P

Yeah, as a programmer, its hard to sit there and put so much time and effort into something that gives virtually no return. I have buddies that are trying to get me to play Warhammer Online and WoW, but I'd rather spend hours programming than leveling.
