I've had to reinstall Windows XP like over 9000 times so far within the past couple of DAYS like 2 days...
Now, this isn't a post dissing Microsoft or Windows...
Now, I JUST did a clean wipe of my HDD and reinstalled Windows XP and BEFORE I did anything at all I installed AVG...
And it said I had an infection already...
Now I'm pretty sure something is up here if I already having the virus after the computer being on for 1 second after the installation of AVG...
Does anyone know why the hell it is doing this?
Also, if I clean the viruses, then it just gives me the BSOD because it's cleaning important files...
I'm getting Norton right now, hopefully this will prove to be a better program for me...

AVG does produce a number of false positives, so it may be something you can ignore. Also, if you're using a pirated version of Windows or a back up image, there could be an embedded virus. Suggestion? Find an official Windows disc and install it.
Also, some viruses can be transferred just by connecting to an infected machine or its same network(multiple machines on your home network?) If you're using any thing that has come from or connected to the internet, it could be on there from that(i.e. an external HD).

Most likely another machine/harddrive has an infection. Possibly? There are some viruses so malicious that they can't be deleted with a simple format and reinstall. Very few, but you may have to dban the drive to get it off. Also going for the infected copy of windows.
Pssst, told you it wasn't normal

Is it an original XP disc. Make sure to use something with SP2 integrated, or SP3 if you can find it. I've never heard of an inherent problem with pirated discs - most torrent sites allow comments/ratings, you would certainly see something there if there was a virus embedded in it. Just get the most updated version of XP you can find and you should be alright.
As far as virus protection, I haven't used any sort of antivirus for years, and I've never had a problem. Unless you're downloading really sketchy shit (like "OMGhotgirlbjcumsex.exe"), this really shouldn't even be an issue. I've had more problems with antivirus software than without.

A boot disk partition utility is probably your only bet, as Dj pointed out.
With it you can completely zero-out your drive, including the boot-sector, and eliminate any viruses that might be hiding in your drive. Caveat: Zero-outing your drive takes a SHIT load of time.

It is an official disk yes, and I highly doubt it has anything to do with the partition...
I think it's just AVG, I'm not having any problems with it right now... thanks for the help...
