Marauder mentioned that Rescue was his favorite NES game, so I decided to check it out. I remember seeing it on the shelves as a kid, but, for whatever reason, I never bothered playing it.

Holy shit, this game is awesome! The different play mechanics and the level of depth is really impressive for an NES title.

...all this time I thought Marauder's avatar was a tiny sprite of Cobra Commander...I was wrong.

Actually, same here.

I bought the actual cart for like $9.99 at the local flea market after hearing how much Marauder liked it.

The game is sooo deep for an NES game. The level of diversity/detail/polish reminds me of Battle Toads NES.

I actually got an NES rom tile editor program thing and extracted all the relevant tiles and put the animation together myself. You know, the top half of the guy is one tile, and the bottom half is another? Weird.

Yeah, everything on NES was tile based. Every single thing you see in an NES game is a collection of 8x8 tiles only supporting 3 colors each.

Yep, you can definitely notice it on larger images on the NES. On the Rescue sniper screen, you can see how they had to cut up the image into separate tiles:

Ah the good old days of 8-bit gaming. Technically you had 4 colors but that channel was alpha. XP. Some games had an interesting way around this though. Like megaman. His face was a different entity/layer from his body to allow more colors. Good times.

You could also code the sprites to be 8 x 16 but it would be applied to all tiles in the game.

As for the game the topic is about I have never heard of it. But if it is as good as you say I will have to see if I can find it and give it a shot.
