I have a free domain name...

Or I will in a bit. The webhosting I'm paying for lets me have two, with Moosader.com being the first, and QuixoticGameStudios.com being the second. Thing is, Quixotic is Jake's little group thing, and since his girlfriend has moved in with him, I (and the rest of the team) are essentially less than chopped liver. So I'm freeing that domain and I'm trying to think of what to do with it...

I had two ideas:
Have something like "vgdev.com" and allow people to host their pages as subdomains from that site. I can set up FTP accounts so they can only access their folder-o-things.

Or
Forget about greatgamesexperiment, create our own directory of indie devs. I'd like to have something like http://www.allegro.cc but with a Developer directory _as well as_ the games directory, and not having one person peer-review every single entry (it takes MONTHS to get your games on there, srsly.), but people can create an account and upload description, image, and link-to-a-download-of-their-game (or, if it's a small file, have it hosted).
The problem with this is... I don't want to build it. :D

Or we could do some combination of the two.

Any ideas?

I'd be leaning more towards the latter. But maybe just make so you can set up a page for each game uploaded (or linked?) so that will incorporate the first?

Yeah. The difference would be though, an entry in a database sort of deal vs. peoples' own personal pages they make themselves.
We could have both, where they're in a database and can have a subdomain for their personal site.

I am limited to 98 more subdomains, though, so it wouldn't be unlimited. The first idea was kind of pick-and-choose, while the second is have anyone register and it creates like http://www.vgdev.com/Moosader/PickinSticks.html [this isn't a link, it just auto-link'd it] (then maybe /Moosader would be the profile page). That, or some number ID.
I haven't done anything with internet-based stuff aside from Javascript, so I don't know what's plausible, really.

Then I'd just go with the entry in database sort of deal. =p.

I just set up my own server on my computer to play around with (and hopefully learn something useful), but I don't really know anything about it. It would be cool if you let us know what's going as you're messing around so maybe I could learn how to do some of the web-based stuff too. It might be a bit more difficult having someone else hosting it though (not sure), I like being able to configure everything myself and seeing what works and what doesn't.

I'm hosting a test mysql database @ http://dandymcgee.redirectme.net/phpmyadmin if anybody is interested in playing with a web-based database tool.
Login: guest/guest (NOTE: Only works when my computer is online. ;) )

I could do this if required of me. I've had experience building basic content management systems with php and my knowledge in web technologies includes the following: HTML,CSS,JS(to a lesser extent), PHP (using mysql databases mainly). I have a fairly good idea as to how to go about doing this.

I have 2 more days until the end of the school term at which point I could get started.

Is your host Linux only or does it allow Microsoft hosting? ASP.Net may not be perfect for everything, but you can put together some decent pages in no time. Its kinda nuts. You can literally setup a formatted grid displaying the contents of a SQL query in maybe 60 seconds?

Videos here for those interested:
http://www.asp.net/learn/

I did some PHP pages in the past, no way I could even come close to matching the speed of laying out a site in ASP.net. IMO coding in C# is easier than PHP as well, its closer to other language syntax.

This is all assuming you don't use a prebuilt solution and just modify it.

A good PHP tutorial place is http://www.youtube.com/phpacademy, just go to playlists and view the basics first, then go on to mysql, and then just watch whatever else interests you. They also have a site for php support at http://www.phpacademy.info

you might wanna do SSI as well, so people could see the # of people who've been to their page, and downloaded stuff, or you know, something else... I don't know much about SSI but I think it could come in handy...

Whenever an admin gets around to reading this... please remove all the "off-topic" posts; they're detracting from the main point of the thread, which I would like to be discussed further.

You could make it a community effort, and allow those who want to to develop different aspects of the site to contribute. A community created by us, for us-- or something along those lines.

You could acquire a main team to come up with a checklist. And have submissions from those who want to help, adhere to strict guidelines while having the main team monitor and check for consistency.

I think BJ is showing off his "leet haxxorz" skills by registering multiple usernames. Elite!

Anyway. Seriously. I really want to do something with this second domain name, and I would really like to keep this thread on track.
If anything else, I need to know what sort of language(s) would be needed to create a dynamic database type directory thing, as I have no idea.

I'll have to log on from home later and find out what my host does/not support. It's the same as what ElysianShadows.com has. I think Jake was complaining about it's lack of Asp.net support.

Alright, mata ne.
