Ok, my friend's goal in life is to work for the Video game industry creating art for games. Of course he turned to me to find out what he should do to kinda get into it. And i recomended Gimp(shop)/Paint(.net)/Photoshop but he can't afford much so i was wondering what are some good free image manipulation programs that he could learn to make 2d graphics for games with? (oh i recomended that he learn that)... He's also very good at drawing (wich is how he decieded art for games)

I use Paint.net for all of my artistic needs and love it. Paintshop Pro is another popular one to look into but I've never used it personally.

Both gimp and paint.net are free. Those are the two i would recommend.

256mb of memory? dude....UPGRADE TIME

Also, why would you want to know the lesser common ones? Wouldn't you prefer to go for the ones that have a large community for support and have proven themselves to work well?

Just because he has 256MB RAM, doesn't mean he has to upgrade. I've been fine with 512MB running vista.

Second, he may want to try something unique and different than the same generic stuff everyone else uses.

Ok, the reason i asked for lesser one's is because well common doesn't always mean better look at windows to linux (personal preference) but to me linux is way "cooler" just plain better (just the feel gets me happy lol).

256 not really in my opinion i can run alot of stuff at 256 thouh i so badly wish i had more (i got 612 on my laptop and 254 112 and 64 mb on my desktops) and well i have been thinking of gimp shot do the fact i heard photoshop is user friendly and (in my own experience) GIMP is not. (he's a beginnner remember)

Honestly though, RAM is so damn cheap these days, why not upgrade? An extra gig in that box would do you good my friend. But I still stick by my Paint.Net suggestion regardless of your rig.
