Bad Day 8(

Today my cat had to have her tail amputated. She's been having a lot of problems this last week after having been missing for two days. She came back with a really bad bladder infection, bleeding a lot and peeing just about everywhere. The vet said something happened to her tail (run over, pulled by a kid, slammed in a door) and it got dislocated and infected. It had to be amputated or she'd lose the use of her back legs and be incontinent forever. As it is she's still incontinent for the time being and if that continues we will have to find another home for her since we don't have a yard and she will need to live somewhere where she can be outside at all times.
She got her butt shaved and has to wear a cone for 2 weeks.

Thanks guys, it's been rough. She's really trying to go outside, so we're taking that as a good sign. She can't go out for two weeks though so it might get a little rough.

Awww, I just now read this post. I'm such a sucker for cats, it almost brings tears to my eyes looking at that sweet little fuzzy face and knowing she's probably suffering. Strange that the vet would suggest keeping her outside forever, without a tail. Cats rely on their tails quite a bit for balance. Don't they make kitty diapers? I've seen doggy ones -- surely they make them for kitties too?
Cats are pretty resilient though, so keep high hopes!!
My mom accidentally ran over one of my cats once, and broke its hip bones and ruptured some of its organs. The vet was able to repair the damage, and gave us a fairly inexpensive false hip for her. Even with all that, it was only a few weeks before the only evidence of anything ever happening was the shaved fur.
I hope she recovers from this quickly and is able to enjoy a happy and fulfilling kitty life. Make sure to give her lots and lots of love!! I'm sorry you had a bad day =/

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. She just came back from a checkup and the vet was really pleased with how well she was doing. She's moving her stump a lot so it seems pretty likely that she'll regain all feeling. We had company last night and she was eager to socialize so everything is looking really positive. She seems much more upset about not being able to go outside or on the furniture than the loss of her tail. My wife is going to stay home from work for the next couple days to take care of her.

The vet didn't recommend that, I guess I just assumed that she would go somewhere like that. The issue would be our landlord (damn california housing costs ::fist shake:: .) We're not supposed to have cat's in the first place, and diaper-cat would be sure to get us evicted
We have another cat who is a pretty big spaz, and she is reacting to the situation by hiding and tucking her tail away everywhere she goes. We're not sure if she's being sympathetic or is scared that her's is next. Either way, it's pretty funny!

Ohhhhh, gotcha. I had a wonderful cat (named Aeris) that I kept secret in an apartment for a while (despite the rules against them there). Then one day I had the maintenance guy come over to take a look at a broken heater, he saw the litter box I guess, and that was that. I had to give Aeris over to my mom to keep, and on top of that was fined $200 for breakin' the rules. Damn rules against kitties. What fiend makes rules against kitties?!
Anywho, it sounds like your fluffy friend has a very good chance of recovering, and is doing well despite her circumstances. Keep us posted and love her lots!

I'm not a cat person, but I would definitely give her lots of love until she is healed =)
