All I really needed has been "Sams Teach Yourself c++ in One hour A Day.". It's pretty slow going but you pick up on it pretty well too, and it's a great reference. Unfortunately, it is missing out a few small things that some more advanced c++ books seem to offer. I'm not a c++ pro and I haven't gone through many books, but I can say I've got a decent understanding of c++ from nothing thanks to this book.

Just remember, this community's got your back when you need programming help. C++ can be a steep, steep learning curve, but do whatever you have to in order to stay motivated! I never had a trusty C++ book to help me along the way, so I wouldn't know where to begin when it comes to tossing titles around, although surely someone here can help you with that. Glad you're considering giving it another try.

I used to just go to the library and check out which ever programming book (langauage) had a fanciful name. So that I could decide which language and which libraries I liked the most. I obviously chose C, C++ and Java. I'm not the best in C, and Java. And I'm not pro in C++ but I learned a LOT from "C++ Primer Plus", "Sam's teach yourself C++ in 21 days", "Problem solving with C++". The latter is a college textbook I believe. In that order those are my favorites.

"Sams Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour A Day" is actually the 6th edition of "Sam's Teach Yourself C++ in 21 days"

I've never used books WHO NEEDS 'EM RIGHT?
But no really, I haven't, and that's just me.
Would I like to have a book? Hmm... maybe...?
Probably not though.

lol pretty much same here
Although decent books act as a guideline when you get off track I think.

I have one book that I actually used, that Game programming with OpenGL book wasn't that helpful, I learned more off the internet than I did in that entire book, although it did have some good stuff on beginning modelling and some more advanced rendering stuff...

This is where books are helpful, although now I just use them for reference with things I'm not so familiar with. Really, you can't go wrong with a book unless its a gold plated platinum version which is very expensive. My shipping details are ....
:P

I have read a lot of programming books and bought even more. I think there are book people and non-book people. I'm a book person.
The benefit of a good book is obvious to most people.
The problem with books is twofold:
1. There are a LOT of bad programming books. I think most of the programming books on the shelves of averge book stores do more harm than good. Sometimes this is a matter of opinion but if you want my opinion about how to judge programming books just ask.
2. The book doesn't do the work for you. This is really important. It's very easy to buy a book. Anyone can do it. But this doesn't solve the problem that learning programming is hard and takes a lot of effort. An excellent book only lets you get the most from your effort, it doesn't make it much easier.
I don't want to put you off books, but when it comes to learning programming, as the non-book people prove, it is only by doing that you make real progress.

Agreed =p.
I usually opt to get a book, because I hate constantly reading from a computer screen... I find having a physical reference easier to use =p
EDIT: Oh yeah, I'd like to say that as others have said, Sams Teach Yourself C++ in an Hour a Day is great =D
