Music and royalties

So I'm currently working on a project where I will be using music that I record myself but has been written by someone else, like John Lennon/Paul McCartney. I'm not sure what the laws on this are (I'm sure it varies from country to country, anyway) when it comes to distribution and so on so I figured I'd ask here about it not having a more suitable forum for the question. Kepp in mind I'm most likely distributing the final product for free and will credit properly.

I'm not quite sure but in Germany if you want to put a cover song on a CD you want to publish you have to pay 500€ beforehand for every song.

Yo!
If you’re doing this for free as you say then you don’t need to worry about that.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply.

Ok, that's what I was thinking but wasn't sure. I'd probably distribute it anyway though, but good to hear other peoples thoughts on it.

You might want to check out Dwelling of the Duels. It features a lot of remixes of classic video game music. They might be able to answer your question.

I wouldn't bet on this. It might be different in every country, too.

I'd say contact the rights holders (the publishers, maybe?) of the music that you're going to be using and see what they say. Of course, that could take quite a while.

Yeah I suppose that would be the best way to go about it to make sure, yet not easy.
