Levels of indirection

I just came across a quote and thought it'd be interesting to share:
"Any design problem can be solved by adding a layer of indirection. Any performance problem can be solved by removing a layer of indirection."
My teacher said it, and google didn't help. Apparently, it's a double quote. The first sentence is attributed to Butler Lampson/David Wheeler, while the other is an unknown counter-quote.
