Video Game movies

Yeah. We've all probably seen, or at least we all probably will see, a movie based off a video game. most of these aren't very good (with the exception of the Resident Evil movies, which are OK), since video games are often usually fantasy-like, and they just don't go well into a feature film.

Take the movie "Super Mario Bros." for instance. It was a movie with actors in it, it wasn't a cartoon. That already tells you something. Basically, Mario is just too cartoony to make a movie with actors in it. When I saycartoony, I don't mean bad, just something that doesn't fit well on the big screen.

Now I've heard that they're planning a "Metroid" movie. Even though I'll probably end up seeing it, I can't say it'll be that great. It's probably going to just be a movie that would seem like a "Star Wars" rip-off to people who havn't played the game. However, if they do manage to fill it with violence and action (just like the Metroid games), iit might be an improvement.

What do you guys think?

A metroid movie? I'd be to embarrased to see it. Maybe if I went alone I would see it. But I just hate to see something good soiled by a movie.

Yeah, I heard something about it as well. I'm pretty sure I'll watch part of it -- at least until I have to run away and barf.

Yes. They're ruining the best games with movies. *Sigh*

Making video games into movies isn't a terrible idea, they just usually pick the wrong games. Either that or make up a new storyline that usually sucks (I haven't seen Resident Evil - but all the reviews say it's just another crappy sci-fi film. On the other hand, if they adapted Resident Evil 4, that would make a very good movie, as long they someone talented to direct it.)

I have yet to see a marginally good game-turned-movie.

Here's something I found today:

- Germany-based Constantin Film AG mentioned they are planning to release two more Resident Evil films. The third movie is titled Resident Evil; Afterlife, which takes place in Tokyo, the film script is created by Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the first movie.

Fred does have a point. If they made movies based on games like Grand Theft Auto (or Street Fighter, possibly) it would make a good film.

I'm also surprised they're making more Resident Evil films. The last two didn't make good headlines.

They've already made a Street Fighter movie, I can't say it's great though.
Personally I'd say the movies would be better if they made them based on more movie-esque games. Like the Metal Gear series. Hideo Kojima always wanted to be a film director anyway.

And if you're interested in a GTA movie you should check out Scarface.
In case you didn't know the music on Flashback FM (GTA 3) is from that movie.

There is a Metal Gear movie in the works, but there isn't much info on it. I just hope Hideo Kojima directs it. He knows what's best for the series.

Shenmue the movie was good.

It wasn't real people. It was every cut scene from the game put together with walking and fighting in a few places.

Heh. It's funny how people can spend such little time on movies like Shenmue and they can be pretty good.

Yeah. Shenmue wasn't a bad movie. Not the best one I've ever seen though. If you've watched the cut-scenes, you've seen it all.
