I think I'm going to switch to Linux

I'm going to have to wipe my computer in a few days or sooner (sister loaded it with viruses'n'trojans'n'whatnot), so I was thinking about making the switch. Anyone here use linux? If so, do you like it? What distro?

I've been hearing a lot of buz over Ubuntu, so I might give that one a try. I need to do a bit more research though. I also want to have it dual boot between windows and linux so I'll never be up a creek.

Any suggestions/comments?

I would never dare unless I had two computers. Unless you're only going to dev on it, I think you're going to regret that. Linux is a powerful system, but the compatibility is shitty. There's alot of stuff you won't be able to run on it.

I know, but I've been running win98 too long. It's time for something new. And plus, I like the concept of linux.

I plan to duel boot, so I shouldn't have a compatibility issue.

1) Deving on Linux is nowhere near is good as on Windows. Visual Studio >>>> GCC and texteditors. Sorry.

2) "Switching" to Linux, especially when you've never even experimented in it is extremely stupid. You're going to be lost in your first day, and back to windows within a week. Use Live CDs or something, "switching" to Linux isn't for the weak at heart, much less for you. Sorry.

3) Get XP. It's about 30000x better than 98, and it's definitely up there with OSX. It's far and away better than Linux.

4) You sound like an anti-MS zealot (probably for stupid reasons. "LOL GATES SUX DUDEZOR!"). Just use Windows--believe it or not, it's the most used OS not just because it's the most popular already. There's a reason people use it--it's easy, has excellent driver support compared to any other system (the best, actually), has great USB, Video card, Soundcard and Monitor support (Linux, you'll be lucky if you get your Video card working without problems, not to mention getting it working well, especially with your extremely limited knowledge.) It's just the best OS out there at the moment.

5) I've used Ubuntu, Knoppix, Debian, Slackware, and Slax. It's not for the weak at heart, and the novelty wears off quickly. Trust me, Linux is not for you.

DJ Yoshi, everything you assumed about me in your post was dead off. If you want to not sound like an ass 24/7, don't assume crap anymore.

I've already tried the live CD's. I like it. I'm already using cygwin to develop for the DC so this would be a step up. (CodeBlocks > Visual StudioÂ²)

As far as compatibility goes, I'll have the best of both worlds. Sounds good to me. Another plus is GIMP, win98 doesn't support GIMP.

PS: Number 4? Come on. You're screwed in the head. Just because I said I'm tired of win98 since I've been using it for 8 years, that makes me an anti-MS zealot? Shut up fool.

WHAT IN GOD'S NAME ARE YOU STILL DOING ON WINDOWS 98!? THE WHOLE UNIVERSE UPGRADED TO A LITTLE SOMETHING CALLED WINDOWS 2000/MILLENIUM THEN WINDOWS XP A GOOD 5 YEARS AGO.

1) No, it's dead on.

2) The fact that you say any developmental environment is > Visual Studio shows that you're an ignorant dumbass. If that were the truth, businesses, coders, everyone would denounce Visual Studio in a heartbeat for anything that was better. Visual Studio still stands to be the most used environment by professionals, and for a REASON.

3) Who says you have to use windows 98? Jesus, I said use Windows XP.

4) No, because instead of going "Oh, maybe I should try Windows 2000 or XP or Vista" you go "Oh man, Windows sucks, me using 98 still after over 8 years, so I guess I'll switch to Linux."

This has nothing to do with opinion. It has everything to do with fact. Visual Studio has the best debugging tools, the most customizable environment, the most support for...everything, fuck, and is the best because of these reasons. Not because "I think so".

1) Who said anything about spending money on Windows?

2) You implied, inferred, and basically said everything BUT "windows sucks". "I'm sick of windows" is a testament to that. Not only that, but you made some wild asinine assumption that you get any kind of compatibility with Linux. That makes me laugh.

What are you talking about? Compatibility with what? Of all the live tests I've done so far, everything I have, hardware wise, is compatible from the get go. I didn't even have to configure anything. I haven't tried my printer yet, but I don't even use it that often anyway, and I'm pretty sure it will work or I can get it to work.

Yeah, I'm sure it works. But that's far from compatible. Compatible means it works well. Nothing works well under linux from the get go--nothing. I don't care what distro you use, you're going to have problems with at least one piece of hardware when you install.

Also, LiveCDs are made to work right out of the box--a real linux install, even from a LiveCD is nowhere near as good as the LiveCD itself.

Why the heck would they do that? I somehow doubt they would downgrade it for the actual install.
