VERY Important game game industry information

Post by avansc »

Hi, okay. so i live in a little town called Raleigh, NC. and we have some of the best development houses around.
Epic, redstorm/ubisoft just to name a few. i did a co op at redstorm my sophomore yeah in college, so i have a little privy on the matter.

okay here to get to what this post is all about. MONEY!

if you want to be very successful and make loads of money being a game programmer probably is not the way to go.
game designer/programmers are grossly underpaid. most money goes to the publishers and so on.

so you may ask, fuck, what should i do.

here is the only real solution you have if you do wanna be a game programmer, (there is another solution but that required heaps of tallent to make original games, i dont fall under that category so i can tell you about that.) i would suggest, that if you have the money, do a MBA after college or maybe after working for a year or 2, dont work to long or you wont wanna go back to school. MBA stands for masters of business administration. this will give you a leg up on the competition and usually result in a managers or team lead position and if yu stick with the company long enough to something like project man, etc.

your salary will also triple almost. going from 50-100K (100k is for a developer with 5-10 years experience) to about 150-250k.

just thought id throw that out there. i wanna retire by like age 50 so this matters to me.

Actually, that sounds absolutely correct. That's how the government works too. The people with the engineering degrees hit salary ceilings and don't get raises after so long. If you want to make more money, you have to move into management with something like an MBA. I see plenty of wisdom in this post.

Kinda glad I don't really wanna do game development for a living.

It's a passion first and a job second, if you wanna do it right. Because otherwise the money isn't there.

It would take a lot of school to get an MBA on top of a CS degree... I have no doubts that it pays off, though.

its onlt one more year.

so normal bs is 4 years then 1 year for MBA. to more than double your potential income.

and this really applies for any technical job. if you are gonna be in the IT field this applies to you.

Dang, I like the way you guys are talking like 100k is not much money. I wonder if it's just because I've lived <20k most of my life?
I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the book would not be destroyed as I had planned.

Ouch. Honestly, with your skillset, I think you should be way closer to the 100k range.

What industry do you work in?

Well, I do know that he is still working on his CS degree, so that's the major reason.

i grew up pretty poor, both my parent were still in school when i was born till about when i was 10, then my mom became a anesthesiologist, she still lives in south africa, she makes a shit ton of money. and my dad is a senior network architect at IBM, so i have quite alot to live up to. so planning now will just make my road a little easier.
