The death of JAVA??

Post by avansc »

So i heard that sun micro systems was bought out by IBM.
what do you guys think.
will this affect the progression/popularity of java?

note, IBM has managed to run some software divisions right into the ground... ;(

tbh, I doubt it...Though i confess I have little to base that on.

With cellphones becoming ever more powerful, Java has too much of a spot on the marketplace as hardware becomes more capable of running the JRE. Java developers need not worry about hardware specifics as they would in most other languages, and there's been a constant push to standardize cellphones (by 2010, supposedly, all cellphones will take a standard charger.) I'm sure that it's safe to assume this standardization will include support for Java JRE's (again, little basis to this assumption other than my personal experience being that most every phone has support).

And there are just some things about Java that are too powerful to discontinue it as a language. Can you dump an object to a database using reflection in C++? No way in hell.

Though I confess this is something I'll probably look into deeper, I really don't know too much about it.

I don't think it will go down. Alot of peoples' living depends on Java (most Uni's here seem to teach it as the main programming language)

Unless of course they want the economy to get worse.

Hell no. But most modern cell phones and the like have Java VMs running.

Dear god, they actually ported ES to a piece of celery!

I.B.M. Withdraws $7 Billion Offer for Sun

I'd shutter at the site of IBM's updates for the JDK. Bring on the load of incomprehensible Indians! It's J. as in jnana, A. as in amet, V. as in vishnu, A. as in aba.

Interesting thing is most of Sony PSP's programs are in c/c++ and blu ray is in java though... Im assuming that the main ps3 programs are in c/c++ with special API's but cant be sure, since its also linux based...

IBM didn't buy java. At least, thats what my RSS feed said. They cancelled the deal pretty much right before they signed the papers. That's why people say it may be the death of Sun. They don't really have that much funding/money.

I think he means Sun doesn't have that much funding/money.
