Extensive knowledge in either C or C++. A good learning source. Motivation. Documentation. IDE. Compiler. SDL includes and libs.

Check out the stickeys here if you have not yet. Lots of information and resources at your finger tips. Need the motivation to plow through the new info though, just like learning anything new... Other than that, I guess start off simple and do lots of research, if you get stuck, chances are someone here might help you.
