It never was hard, it was just new.

The whole reason the rumor of it being "hard" was brought up by Xbots who wanted to name off anything they could to say that the PS3 was bad.
So they claimed it was hard to develop for without knowing anything, typical Xbot...

The PS3 uses the cell processor which is built completely different from what game developers were used too, which is why it seemed hard to develop on.
But obviously it isn't that hard if all these games are being made on it.

You can actually develop without any changes to your code, it just wont be optimized for the processor.
There was a website I read it on, don't remember it though, it might not work after all so don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure it would.

Either way, hard or not, it's definitely more powerful than the Xbox 360's processor which can yield better games in the long run, which it has already proven several times.
There's no place like ~/

I see, BTW xbox uses a modified directx, IDK what api the ps3 uses...

Is there a way for us homebrew little people to develop for the PS3? Something similar to Microsoft's XNA maybe?

I would love to try it. My Xbox is dying anyway.

Why, is OpenGL easier than DirectX?

I've never tried DirectX, although I plan to in the future (simple because it's a tool of the trade).

At the moment all of my projects are cross-platform using SDL and openGL

Not yet. But you never know if Sony will make such an API. If they do, I'm not sure if you could test it on windows. Plus naturally they wouldn't give it all the really exclusive features available in the normal SDK. They need to make money somehow.

I think they wont make an api, I mean Isnt that another branch of business? I mean the choice to make video games was a blind jump too. You never know if they are gonna make money with the API, I mean its technically free to people, how do they get money? just through licensing? I dont thing that would be successful unless they make a OS and make it exclusive to it like what microsoft is doing...

And sony and microsoft are bitter rivals. If they did do it, I think they would put it on linux.

That would be a bad move even for sony, If they make it linux exclusive, they lose atleast 75% of the computer users right there. I mean No one uses linux unless you are hardcore or cheap bastard that hates paying for things... I mean I love linux, Im using it as I type, but its not a good business move. I mean microsoft already has a good foundation of the market in the computing industry, and sony jumping in is potentially dangerous. But a better choise is make an API for Power PCs and PS3 linux, that still wont be enough to compete with microsoft in that area of business...

It's pretty daft to think no Sony-licensed developers use Windows. Some of them even use Visual Studio. If they ever release tools for homebrew developers, they would probably try to make them multiplatform. Here are a few accounts of a few developers that worked on commercial video games and what they used:
http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums ... _id=530252
It'd be a bit childish and odd of [Sony] not to [use competitor's products], kinda like if Xbox 360 didn't work or wasn't tested on Sony TV's because they're competitors in a different space.

Sony care about developers making games for PS3 and will do what they can to make that easier (...more games or higher quality). A small part of that includes supplying development tools that integrate with the IDE and run on the OS that most of their [external] registered developers use. People aren't making PC or Xbox games with those tools, they're making PS3 games with them, no loss for Sony...
When I was doing PS2 dev we used Codewarrior.
XB360 and PS3 dev has all been VS2005.
I hear that Wii dev uses Codewarrior as well.

In short; afaik VS is basically the dominate IDE used in professional dev. in the C++ world and given how much better it is than any of the IDEs you listed in that area that really isn't surprising.

Also, the SDKs from MS and Sony intergrate directly with the ide which makes life easier.
Well I'll be.

A) If you're a serious game studio, I don't think you'd be intimidated by developing on the PS3. And I don't think that's the point that these "ignorant" Xbox fans are making. It's harder for indie developers. This is pretty difficult to refute, but you're more than welcome to try.

B) If it's not harder to develop for, then why did the CEO of Sony say that it was - intentionally: http://news.cnet.com/sony-ps3-is-hard-t ... n-purpose/

C) Yes, you can develop on PS3 from Windows - Harmonix coders use Visual Studio just like most big companies. Sony might be retarded, but they're not that retarded.

Guys, there is no contest. Xbox 360 is easier to develop for than PS3 in every arena: indie or commercial.

Like aamesxdavid said, Sony has never even tried to hide that fact. They have actually flaunted it. It's common knowledge.
