Super Mario Bros. for Sega Master System???
Hooolly shit. My wife and I stumbled upon this last night....
Apparently, back in the day, Sega partnered up with Samsung to release the Master System in Korea - it was called the Gam*Boy.
To boost sales, the Gam*Boy was bundled with an unlicensed Super Mario Bros. clone called Super Boy II. AND, they didn't stop there! They followed up with Super Boy III and IV! The fascinating thing about this is that Sega did NOTHING about it. They let it happen and sales continued. How they didn't get their asses sued off by Nintendo is beyond me.
Check this out...

Super Boy IV:

The even sadder part is that the SMS had more horsepower than the NES, so the game should NOT perform that horribly...that's just bad programming.
Yep, this is the kinda stuff I LOVE about collecting retro games - I just peed a little. My new mission is to find one of these beasts. It will be mine...oh yes, it will be mine.

HOLY SHIT!! That's fucking AWESOME! O.o;;
I cannot believe I didn't know this already. Great discovery. I got a pretty big laugh at some of the game, and how sketchy it appeared to run. ;p
I would love to own that. I wonder how much it would be to obtain one of these? I'll try an ebay search sometime.

If anyone finds a site thats selling any of these cartridges, please let me know! Apparently, the Gam*Boy can play the Japanese Sega Mark III games, so I'm hoping that the reverse is true as well. If that's the case, I can play this masterpiece of craptitude in my very own home!

My question is why they didn't get sued over the use of the "gam boy" name.

From what I've read, the "Gam*Boy" name was a play on the Korean name for the NES - the "ComBoy." But yeah, why didn't EVERYONE sue over this shit?mattheweston wrote:My question is why they didn't get sued over the use of the "gam boy" name.
btw, apparently they also made a Dr. Mario clone..."Dr. Hello"
UPDATE: I found and purchased a copy of Dr. Hello for the SMS on eBay

If it was in the US, they would probably have been sued for sure. Korea probably doesn't care or it wasn't worth the trouble to sue for its location.mattheweston wrote:My question is why they didn't get sued over the use of the "gam boy" name.

Holy fucking shit! That's awesome!
...but I must say, somebody must have really sucked at assembly. The Master System could rape the living shit out of the NES. The games look so choppy...

As I see it, the framerate is okay, the scrolling is just tile-wise. What a failureGyroVorbis wrote:Holy fucking shit! That's awesome!

Re: Super Mario Bros. for Sega Master System???
Okay...so my copy of "Dr. Hello" arrived in the mail today. Reading the box art, it was pretty cool to read that the game was ported from the Samsung GAM*BOY. I also found it a bit odd that the controls are explained right on the back cover. Isn't the back cover made to entice potential buyers rather than instruct them on how to play the game they don't even own yet?
So anyways, after a quick chuckle and "wtf" moment with the back cover, I check out the side art...and what do I find??? Fucking Dr. Wily!
SEGA, are you serious!?!
I'm speechless.
