I'm always trying to think of stuff to draw to add to my OpenArt webpage, but it can be hard without an actual game to make art for.
One of the things I think that I will do is make "Bootleg Art", ala art that looks like it's from a beloved game, but is totally original. The intention is partially to help people make clones of their favorite games without IP infringement, and also just to provide more varied art styles on the page (which will be getting an overhaul sometime soonish). The sprites I do, as always, will be licensed as CC-0 (aka public domain).
Anyway, here's one of the examples:
"Legacy of Zudora" sprites.
So my question to you guys are: What are your favorite 2D games, or just what kind of style or time period would you like to see in general?
So the target audience is for people who want to make a zelda game (for instance) and don't want to/can't use ripped sprites because they want to release a game without copyright infringement or maybe even sell it? Am I right or..? I don't want to be negative about this idea, but feels like a very slim audience. Pixel art itself is farely slim.
This got me an idea though, gonna go to bed now but I'll hit you up on FB later.
Edit: I like the style of those sprites btw, nice work

It's partially to have an idea of what all to draw, but there are tons of people who use ripped sprites out there. I doubt most of them will be selling the games, but it'd be nice to have a legal alternative.

Good idea, though will be a bit hard to make original monsters.
